A Call to Listen

I think it is fair to say that if people are looking for perfect people as the candidates for public office, then they will be looking for a long time.  Instead, let's look for leaders in improving the lives of all people, by any means necessary.

Obama has been unfortunate enough to be attached to some unsavory characters, and so has McCain over the course of the election process.  The same can be said for any candidate for political office throughout the world.  Both sides highlight the worst possible view of the other candidate when what we really need is an explanation of the issues and how they might tackle them.  The debates have been the candidates saying they will fix the problems, but no means of how they might do this.

It's time that we the people begin to hold our politicians accountable for the millions of dollars they spend trying to win the glorified popularity contest the presidential election has become.

Let's face it, right now is a very dark time to be a citizen of any country, and not just because the economic issues we face.  Humanity stands at the border of something so much more damning than poverty, we face the possibility of a regression in what makes us the first species in the history of this place, with the true power to both destroy the world, and create so many amazing things.

I don't care if you are Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Jewish, Atheist, Agnostic, or any other major religion, it is time we take control of our destiny and become the people we can be, not the ones we are now.

On Election Day one thing is certain, neither Obama or McCain are the ones to bring this country into further prosperity or Enlightenment, instead look in the mirror and ask yourself what you can do.

Not what you can do for this country, but what you can do for your fellow human being.

Your Result: Literature Nerd

Does sitting by a nice cozy fire, with a cup of hot tea/chocolate, and a book you can read for hours even when your eyes grow red and dry and you look sort of scary sitting there with your insomniac appearance? Then you fit this category perfectly! You love the power of the written word and it's eloquence; and you may like to read/write poetry or novels. You contribute to the smart people of today's society, however you can probably be overly-critical of works.

It's okay. I understand.

You may say I'm a dreamer.

Nothing is as depressing as looking at yourself and realizing you are one or two turns from being at a dead end in your life. I'd love to leave my head in the murky waters of academia for the rest of my life...but alas it does not pay the bills. Hence I came to an understanding of sorts this past week, that very well may have long lasting implications for my life.

Call it humanity's never ending pursuit of self actualization, but I'd like to get on with life...and stop spinning my wheels in college. This summer is going to be big for me...time to take charge of my destiny in a manner of speaking.

Spring Has Come

Despite freezing my hiney off this morning I will officially declare that yes Spring is here in Michigan.

It is insane how easy it is to get isolated from the outside world when going to school in small town America. If I didn't watch the Daily show and Colbert Report I would have no idea what is going on in the world.

Think about it though, why would anyone want to watch the news every day. If it isn't murders or rapists being released back onto the streets, it is global warming or North Korea/Iran messing with Nuclear material, and perhaps the best is the crap economy we are staggering around in now.

I'm not saying it's wise to avoid the news, but with the issues of life weighing down on us it doesn't surprise me in the least that people can't name things like the speaker of the house or even the chief justice of the supreme court.

Ah well, next year is an election year, most of us will catch up on our politics then.

School

Oh the joys of being a poor Graduate student. Spring break is coming up rapidly and my big plans for the week include running in the snow and catching up on some writing that I've been meaning to. Maybe if I'm lucky the sun will come out for a couple of hours during the week.

Nearing Groundhog's Day

Every time that we near this time of year I am always reminded of Bill Murray in Groundhog's Day. I still think that is the pinnacle of repeating the day type movies and I've laughed so hard watching it that I never thought I'd stop.

Just a random thought, but I stand by it.

The Beauty of Snow Storms

I just finished with classes for the week, and as I walked back to my place from the campus I took in the bluster of a January snow storm. Despite the fact that I've lived in snow country my entire life I still love the feel of making a snow ball or watching others make snow angels. Call me a kid at heart, but it is the simple things that make life worth living.
